Cody Rhodes secured another shot at the WWE Championship following the July 3 episode of SmackDown, setting up a quick rematch against Sami Zayn on the upcoming WWE RAW in Chicago.
Zayn, who captured the WWE Championship at Night of Champions last weekend, opened SmackDown by addressing his title victory. His celebration was interrupted by Rhodes, leading to a tense exchange between the two. The situation escalated when Jey Uso made his way to the ring, congratulating Zayn while also staking his own claim to the championship.
Adam Pearce, serving as interim SmackDown General Manager, stepped in and announced that Rhodes and Uso would face off later in the night in a number one contender’s match to determine Zayn’s next challenger.
In the main event, Rhodes defeated Uso to earn the opportunity. He secured the win after hitting Cross Rhodes and scoring the pinfall, officially becoming the new number one contender for the WWE Championship.
Backstage earlier in the show, Zayn voiced frustration over the situation. As a SmackDown star, he questioned why he would be required to defend his title on RAW. Pearce responded by confirming that Monday’s episode would be treated as a supershow, featuring talent from both RAW and SmackDown, though he did not provide further explanation.
