Punk opened the July 10 episode of SmackDown in Oklahoma City, receiving a strong reaction from the crowd in his first appearance as champion on the brand. During his promo, he addressed the WWE Universe and mentioned several possible challengers, including Royce Keys and Damian Priest.
The segment quickly shifted when Cody Rhodes made his way to the ring. Rhodes reminded Punk of their previous exchange on WWE RAW following WrestleMania, when Punk had asked when they would face each other for the championship.
Punk repeated the same question, leading Rhodes to respond with a direct answer.
“SummerSlam.”
The moment led to a handshake between the two, and SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis made the match official for WWE SummerSlam 2026.
CM Punk SummerSlam Match Could Still Change Direction
Despite the announcement, the CM Punk SummerSlam match may not remain a singles contest. Earlier reports indicated that WWE has considered expanding the match into a multi-man main event involving Gunther and Sami Zayn.
The booking on SmackDown appears to support that possibility. Nick Aldis also announced a tag team match for Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 18, featuring CM Punk and Cody Rhodes teaming up against Gunther and Sami Zayn. This match could further develop the storyline and potentially lead to a larger match at SummerSlam.
Gunther remains a key figure in the title picture after attacking Cody Rhodes on WWE RAW, an action that removed Rhodes from his previous opportunity and allowed Punk to step in and win the championship.
At the same time, there has been speculation about Gunther’s direction involving Nick Aldis. Reports have suggested a possible confrontation between the two, especially after Gunther reacted aggressively following the announcement related to Saturday Night’s Main Event. If that situation escalates, it could impact whether Gunther remains part of the SummerSlam title match.
For now, CM Punk vs Cody Rhodes is the official match. However, with multiple storylines intersecting, the final shape of the CM Punk SummerSlam match may not be decided until closer to the event.
