CM Punk Says a Heel Turn Would Be “Bad Business” Right Now

CM Punk may want to be a villain again, but he doesn’t think the timing is right. During a recent Self Made Sessions appearance, Self Made Pro explained where Punk currently stands on another heel run in WWE. The topic came up while discussing Punk’s past comments about fans liking him too much for a heel turn to land properly. According to Self Made Pro, Punk would jump at the chance to go bad again — he just doesn’t think it makes business sense at the moment.

Self Made Pro said, “He’d love to be a bad guy again. He’s of the belief that, like, that’s just bad business right now.”

Even without an official turn, Punk is about to get a taste of what being the villain feels like. His Undisputed WWE Championship match against Kevin Owens in Toronto is shaping up to be one of the most personal feuds he has had in years. Their August 14 SmackDown confrontation dragged old issues from nearly two decades ago into the spotlight. Owens accused Punk of tearing him down early in his career, while Punk fired back by calling Owens wasted potential and questioning how far Owens would have gone if Punk had been around during some of his biggest moments.

With Owens heading home to Canada, Punk knows exactly how the crowd will react. Self Made Pro said Punk is fully aware he will be treated like the heel in Toronto and has been shaping his promos with that reaction in mind. He said, “CM Punk is extremely aware that he’s going to be a massive heel in Toronto, and everything he’s done in his promos was done with the mindset of, ‘I’m going to go into Toronto as a bad guy.’”

Punk isn’t fighting the crowd. He’s leaning into it. Toronto gets a version of Punk who is ready to be hated, Owens gets the full support of his hometown, and WWE gets a preview of what another Punk heel run could look like without officially committing to one.

It gives Punk a chance to scratch that itch while still protecting the business side of things. And if the reaction in Toronto is as loud as expected, WWE may soon have a clearer picture of whether a full heel turn is worth pulling the trigger on.
