Sheamus officially left WWE last week after choosing not to renew his contract, making him a free agent for the first time in nearly two decades. His departure has sparked immediate speculation about where he will wrestle next, and one prominent voice believes AEW should make a serious effort to sign him. WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross discussed Sheamus’ future on Grilling JR, saying the former world champion would be a strong fit for AEW — especially if it leads to a reunion with Cesaro.
Ross explained that pairing Sheamus and Cesaro again would instantly strengthen AEW’s tag team division. He praised Sheamus’ overall ability and said the duo still has plenty to offer. Ross added that he hopes Sheamus lands somewhere stable and noted his personal interest in calling Sheamus’ matches again. He also suggested that AEW could offer a flexible schedule. “Even if it’s a limited engagement contract where he’s not working every single time the lights come on, he’s there. I’m not for anybody having to do that … he’s got a lot of gas left in the tank.”
Jim Ross believes AEW is the right landing spot
Ross’ comments come as more voices within the wrestling industry point toward AEW as the ideal destination for Sheamus. Reports last week indicated that a “high level” WWE official attempted to convince TKO to keep Sheamus, highlighting his value both in the ring and behind the scenes. Despite that effort, Sheamus chose to move on, opening the door for new opportunities.
Eric Bischoff and Matt Hardy have also expressed the belief that AEW would benefit from adding Sheamus to its roster. His experience, physical style and proven track record make him one of the most notable free agents in recent memory. With Cesaro already in AEW, the possibility of reuniting The Bar adds another layer of intrigue.
For now, Sheamus has not revealed his next move. After 19 years with WWE, his free‑agent status gives him the chance to explore fresh options, new matchups and a different environment. If AEW decides to pursue him, the promotion could gain a veteran presence with plenty left to offer — and potentially revive one of the most respected tag teams of the last decade.
