Buddy Matthews AEW return appears to be drawing closer following a major update on his recovery. After being sidelined for over a year with a serious ankle injury, the House of Black member has now hinted that he has been officially cleared to compete again.
Matthews took to Instagram on Tuesday with a cryptic message that strongly suggests his in-ring return is approaching.
“The Devil signed the clearance. Hell stamped its approval,” Matthews wrote. “No more barriers. Only timing.”
Buddy Matthews AEW Return Nears Following Long Recovery
Matthews has been out of action since February 2025, when he suffered an ankle injury during his entrance for a match against Kazuchika Okada at AEW Grand Slam Australia. Despite the setback, he went on to compete in the bout, initially believing the injury would not keep him out for long.
However, the situation proved more serious than expected. Matthews eventually underwent ankle surgery and faced a lengthy rehabilitation process that kept him away from AEW programming for an extended period.
Earlier this year, his wife, WWE star Rhea Ripley, shared that Matthews had resumed in-ring training as part of his recovery, signaling progress behind the scenes.
The couple were also recently spotted at a Power Slap event, where former WWE and AEW star Jake Hager was knocked out by Mahabali Shera, a former TNA standout.
While AEW has not officially confirmed a return date, Matthews’ latest statement indicates that he may now be medically cleared, with only timing standing between him and a comeback.
As of now, Buddy Matthews AEW return has not been formally announced, but all signs point toward his long-awaited return to competition happening in the near future.
