The AEW star shared the news via his Instagram stories, posting a photo from his hospital bed with Rhea Ripley by his side for support.
Matthews sustained the injury during AEW Grand Slam Australia, where he challenged Kazuchika Okada for the AEW International Championship. Despite rolling his ankle before the bell even rang, Matthews proceeded to wrestle the full match, lasting more than 13 minutes before ultimately falling to Okada.
Since then, the injury has lingered. Back in June, Matthews revealed to fans that his ankle was not healing as expected, prompting concerns about a possible long-term absence. Now, with surgery officially underway, Matthews hopes to finally resolve the issue and begin a proper recovery process.
