Nick Khan Says WWE Avoids Signing Talent Just To Bench Them – WWE President Nick Khan addresses concerns over talent acquisition strategy following recent signings from AEW.
Khan has made it clear that the company is intentional when signing new talent and does not bring in performers simply to keep them from working elsewhere.
During an appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast, Khan was asked about the potential downside of acquiring too much talent—a concern that has grown following the arrival of several notable former AEW stars in WWE. Recent years have seen Cody Rhodes, Jade Cargill, Ethan Page, Ricky Saints, Rey Fenix, and Penta all make the move from AEW to WWE.
Simmons posed the question about whether WWE risks signing too many performers, resulting in some being underutilized or benched. In response, Khan rejected the idea that WWE hoards talent:
“That’s something we won’t do. We won’t sign and bench people. We sign people who we want to use. If another entity signs and benches people now, that’s not something we would do.”
Simmons responded, “That’s a thing that happens.”
Khan doubled down on his point, stating: “That’s what I’ve been told from time to time. Not us.”
The comments appear to be a subtle nod to AEW’s large and sometimes criticized roster, which has seen its own stars publicly express frustration over limited screen time.
With WWE continuing to make high-profile acquisitions, Khan’s remarks suggest that every signing is part of a strategic plan, not just a reactionary move against rival promotions.
