Before this unexpected comeback, numerous reports indicated WWE’s disinterest in bringing back Punk, even making references to him on television. At the post-event press conference, Triple H revealed that the deal to bring Punk back happened swiftly, contrary to earlier indications that he wouldn’t appear at Survivor Series.
According to insights shared on Wrestling Observer Radio by Dave Meltzer, WWE President Nick Khan was instrumental in Punk’s return, backed by Triple H’s support. Surprisingly, Vince McMahon wasn’t involved in the decision-making process.
“He signed a multi-year deal. The deal came together about ten days ago. It was a secret from almost everyone. Paul Levesque [Triple H] said the TKO people found out by watching the TV, which I thought was ridiculous until I asked around and heard the exact same thing.”
Meltzer highlighted that the multi-year deal was kept tightly under wraps, with only a select few aware of the development. He mentioned that TKO personnel, focused on business and revenue rather than creative aspects, were reportedly unaware until Punk’s televised return—an approach similar to the UFC’s operations.
“It was a Nick Khan call in the end. Vince had nothing to do with it. Paul Levesque obviously had a lot to do with it, and those were the two guys who were the point guys.” Meltzer was told that if WWE felt like there was a demand for Punk to come back, they wouldn’t fight it.
The decision-making primarily rested with Nick Khan and Triple H, indicating that WWE responded to the perceived demand for Punk’s return without any opposition, underscoring the business-oriented approach behind this surprising move.
