Gunther Sets New Record for Longest Intercontinental Title Reign – WWE Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER has achieved a historic milestone by setting a new record for the longest reign in Intercontinental Title history. This achievement surpasses the previous record of 454 days held by WWE Hall of Famer The Honky Tonk Man, which began in June 1987.
GUNTHER’s remarkable reign as Intercontinental Champion began when he captured the title from Ricochet on the June 10, 2022, episode of WWE SmackDown in Baton Rouge, LA. Throughout his reign, he has successfully defended the championship against various opponents in televised matches, including Ricochet, Shinsuke Nakamura, Sheamus (twice), WWE Hall of Famer & current United States Champion Rey Mysterio, Braun Strowman, Drew McIntyre, Xavier Woods, Mustafa Ali, Matt Riddle, and Chad Gable.
In addition to his televised defenses, GUNTHER has defended the title in 50 non-televised live events. Notably, this remarkable reign includes 4 disqualification (DQ) finishes, with DQ outcomes occurring in matches against Sheamus, AJ Styles (twice), and Ricochet.
WWE commemorated this historic achievement with a graphic celebrating GUNTHER’s milestone, captioning it with “History made.” Triple H, WWE’s Chief Content Officer, also extended congratulations to GUNTHER on Twitter, acknowledging that this is just the beginning for the leader of Imperium.
While there is no official announcement regarding GUNTHER’s next title defense, he is scheduled to appear at the WWE Superstar Spectacle event in India, which is set to take place on Friday. GUNTHER’s reign as Intercontinental Champion has solidified his status as a dominant force in WWE, and he is sure to remain a key figure in the company’s future.
