ESPN’s WWE Off The Top Rope Recap: The Dudley Boyz Talk TLC, Chyna, Mae Young

The following is a recap of tonight’s new ESPN / WWE Off The Top Rope segment with the Dudley Boyz as the special guests.

Jonathan Coachman welcomes the Dudleys to the show and says this is a bit awkward, because he’s never interviewed anyone who put him through a table. Bubba and Devon laugh and talk about remembering it clearly, then Coach talks about if they knew using a table would take off like it did. Bubba says Ric Flair and Terry Funk were some of the first guys to use a table, but he and Devon put a little theatrics into it and made it a little more fun. Devon says they thought they would leave ECW and do something different in WWE, but the table was popular and stayed with them.

Coach talks about the Dudleys being remembered for powerbombing Mae Young through tables, and Bubba puts her over as being one of the toughest people they were in the ring with. He says Mae went to Vince McMahon after they powerbombed her in the ring, and told Vince she wanted the Dudleys to powerbomb her off of a cage. Coach is taken back a bit, and Bubba says Mae was great to work with and they became good friends, and it calls back to the respect they have for people who came before them.

Coach asks what Chyna meant to the evolution of women’s wrestling, and Devon says Chyna had a lot of “firsts” and she deserves a lot of credit. Devon says the WWE fans got a first-hand look at what Chyna did, and she stood toe-to-toe with a lot of big guys, and if you didn’t give her respect she would beat it out of them. Bubba says Chyna fit the mold of the Attitude Era, and they were friendly with her and she will definitely be missed.

Coach asks about what TLC matches mean to them when it’s all said and done. Bubba says it’s hard to take you through all of it, but they thank Edge and Christian and Matt and Jeff Hardy, and don’t talk much about how good the matches were. He says the proof is there with how the fans react to those matches and how they hold up today, then Devon says they were on a grand stage and they were scared, but made it happen and made it out safe. Devon says after each one, they hugged each other and told each other how much they cared, because those matches didn’t happen unless all six of them made it work.
