The Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch between World Champion Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley was heavily promoted in advance of the AEW Revolution pay-per-view event, but things didn’t go according to plan.
There was supposed to be a big explosion when the clock counted down to zero, but that didn’t happen. In the rehearsals, everything went to plan. It was a botched explosion or as someone has stated, a “dud.”
AEW has blamed it on various things to cover it up such as Omega building a horrible bomb.
Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the concept for the match had been in the works for a long time.
He wrote, “Kenny Omega came up with the idea more than a year ago, and Jon Moxley was picked as the opponent.” He noted that the idea going into the match was to have the greatest and most spectacular match of its kind as both Omega and Moxley thought the other was the perfect opponent for that job.
Omega has issued a lengthy statement about the lackluster ending.
