Legendary 17-time World Champion John Cena has opened up about his transition into retirement, admitting that while he deeply misses competing in the squared circle, he remains confident that stepping away from in-ring action was the correct decision.
Speaking with People, the Hollywood star candidly expressed how much he longs for the adrenaline of performing in front of live crowds following the conclusion of his historic farewell run.
“I miss all of it every day. I miss performing every single day,” Cena said. “And that said, just because I miss it here [in my heart] doesn’t make it the right decision here [in my head].”
Cena explained that he frequently experiences moments of nostalgia, particularly when managing modern-day stress or navigating demanding schedules.
“I have moments of nostalgic reflection on the daily. A lot of times, that’s when you’re overwhelmed by stress or confused or maybe you don’t know the answers that you’re trying to seek,” Cena added. “Nostalgia is in itself looking back to a simpler time in the unknown or during crisis. I got daily moments of that, man. Daily. I’ll look back on my early wrestling days, or I’ll look back on college days, or I’ll look back on my life in dormitory school, or even as a kid. That happens on the daily, man.”
While The Peacemaker actor has made it clear that he prefers professional wrestling to acting, he recognized that his body could no longer handle the physical rigors of a full-time wrestling career.
Although his days as an active competitor are behind him, Cena’s presence will remain attached to WWE. While promoting upcoming film projects, Cena reiterated that he expects to remain involved in non-wrestling capacities, including hosting roles and brand initiatives like the inaugural John Cena Classic tournament scheduled for later this year.
