John Cena Comments On GUNTHER’s WWE Creative Direction: “Man, They’re Wasting GUNTHER!”

John Cena has addressed the current creative trajectory of GUNTHER, the man who forced him to submit in his final professional wrestling match during the December 2025 Saturday Night’s Main Event special.

Speaking during an appearance on Busted Open Radio while on a promotional media tour, the 16-time World Champion weighed in on fan discussions regarding GUNTHER’s current usage on WWE television.

Cena Speaks On Creative Booking And “Cooling Off” GUNTHER

Addressing widespread fan debate over whether the Ring General’s momentum has stalled, Cena explained his perspective on long-term creative planning and his role in elevating GUNTHER during their historic encounter.

“I know there’s sentiment out there that like, ‘Man, they’re wasting GUNTHER!’ Maybe currently they are. But I don’t see the view from the penthouse. I’m not in those meetings where they’re just looking at the whiteboard, connecting the dots. Maybe they’re just cooling him off. Maybe they’re putting him away from TV. I don’t know. What I am gonna do is I’m not gonna challenge the opinion of, ‘Aye, I’m not gonna give this for this guy and you’re gonna forget him.’ This is the work that I need to do for today, and we’re gonna make him look the best we can, and I’m gonna give him as much steam as I can, and what you do with it afterwards, that ain’t my call.”

Recent WWE Television Direction

The discussion around GUNTHER comes following recent developments on WWE programming. On the September 25 edition of SmackDown, GUNTHER took the pinfall loss in a Money in the Bank qualifying match that also featured CM Punk and Finn Bálor. Alongside his high-profile match outcomes, GUNTHER has simultaneously been featured in comedic backstage segments involving Danhausen, who has routinely shadowed him during recent broadcasts.
