Former WCW President Eric Bischoff has strongly criticized All Elite Wrestling and Tony Khan following a scary injury sustained by Steven Borden, the son of WWE Hall of Famer Sting, at the AEW All Out pay-per-view.
Borden suffered an injury during a high-risk double coast-to-coast spot in a tag team contest alongside Darby Allin against Kyle Fletcher and Kevin Knight. The referee immediately called off the match, and Borden was stretchered out and transported to a local hospital. While CT scans returned negative and Tony Schiavone later confirmed that Borden was doing well without lingering headaches, Bischoff argued on 83 Weeks that the green star should never have been placed in that position.
“Who let him do that spot? Of all of these so-called veterans and guys who should know better that are collecting a paycheck, why didn’t somebody say that’s not really the right thing for this kid to be doing at this stage of his career? He actually shouldn’t even be wrestling on TV yet. He’s a deer in the headlights. I’ve been a deer in the headlights. My son Garrett was a deer in the headlights. You have to learn. You have to gain experience. You have to develop the confidence, not just memorize what you should do in the ring and the physical part of it,” Bischoff stated.
Bischoff expressed concern over the head injury, noting that rushing inexperienced talent into high-stakes television roles risks ruining their long-term potential.
“You’re setting the kid up for failure. I’m really disappointed, particularly because of the head injury. You only have so many opportunities in life and you have to protect the opportunity,” he added.
Bischoff emphasized his deep personal respect for Sting and placed the ultimate responsibility on AEW President Tony Khan for approving the match layout:
“Number one, Tony should have known. Now, can he know every moment and every spot in every match? No. I’m sorry, that’s as much Tony’s fault as it is anybody else’s. That’s his responsibility.”
Following Bischoff’s comments, AEW VP of Technical Coordination QT Marshall pushed back on social media, clarifying that Borden has been actively training since 2024 with AEW camps, Darby Allin, the NJPW Dojo, and working independent dates prior to his pay-per-view appearance.
