Eric Bischoff Cautions AEW Against Pushing Sting’s Son Steven Borden Too Early

Wrestling veteran Eric Bischoff has voiced concerns over AEW’s handling of Steven Borden, stating that the son of Hall of Famer Sting is being thrust into major spotlight spots before acquiring enough in-ring experience.

Borden’s high-profile appearance came over the weekend at AEW All In 2026 at Wembley Stadium, where both he and Sting got involved in a storyline segment alongside Darby Allin and Kevin Knight.

Bischoff Urges Caution On “83 Weeks” Podcast

Speaking on the latest edition of his 83 Weeks podcast alongside host Conrad Thompson, Bischoff prefaced his critiques by emphasizing his deep personal respect for Sting.

He noted that Sting had previously been very supportive of his own son, Garrett Bischoff, when Garrett broke into professional wrestling. However, Bischoff warned that pushing Borden too quickly risks stunting his long-term growth.

“I’ve got to be careful what I say here because Sting was very supportive of my son Garrett when Garrett broke into the business,” Bischoff explained. “And I don’t want to sound like I’m unsupportive, but my concern, and I say this as a friend, my concern is that they’re pushing Sting’s son a little too early.

“He’s not ready for the positions that he’s being put into. He barely knows his way around the ring, and now he’s doing high spots like he did. I would just love to see him take a little more time before he’s thrust into the kind of limelight he’s being thrust into because if he’s not ready, he’ll end up in the same position as a Erik Watts, for example. Getting the push, getting the visibility, getting the highlights or the spot, but not really having the experience.

“And that’s all it is, is reps. It’s all it is, is reps and confidence that comes with it to really showcase himself out there and not look unprepared.”

While Borden has made notable cameos on AEW pay-per-views, his in-ring mileage remains limited:

Total Matches: According to Cagematch records, Borden has competed in 32 total matches to date.
Dark Match Reps: A vast majority of his bouts—26 in total—have been untelevised dark matches taking place before AEW events.
Recent Match Outing: His most recent match took place prior to the August 19 episode of AEW Dynamite in Baltimore, Maryland, where he teamed with Kiran Grey to pick up a victory over Myles Hawkins and Ryan O’Neill.
