WWE legend John Cena has officially confirmed that the inaugural John Cena Classic Tournament will take place this December, bringing a unique, fan-driven live event to the company’s year-end schedule.
First announced by the 17-time World Champion at the Backlash premium live event in May, the tournament is set to showcase developmental talent competing against established main roster stars. Rather than following a traditional bracket, the event features a distinct interactive concept where fans will vote directly to crown the ultimate winner based on the core values of the “John Cena” persona—regardless of traditional match outcomes.
“Giving The Vote To The People”
Appearing on NBC’s TODAY, Cena revealed that the event will anchor WWE’s December lineup, aligning with earlier reports slating the broadcast for Saturday, December 12—coinciding with the one-year anniversary of his retirement from in-ring competition.
Cena expressed excitement for the experimental format while acknowledging the bold risk involved in letting the audience decide the champion:
- “This year in December, I’m really excited about announcing the John Cena Classic. So we’re going to do an event based off all the memories, all the nostalgia, and the I.P. and the core values of the character, which is me. Hustle, loyalty, respect, perseverance, virtue, overcoming the odds and giving the vote to the people.”
- “Our audience is gonna decide our champion on that night. So it’s a really unique live event. I don’t even know if it’s going to work. I’m still taking bold chances in the WWE space, and I’m proud to be helping with the John Cena Classic.”
