A new number one contender for the WWE NXT Women’s Championship has been crowned, but it came wrapped in controversy and deception.
In the main event of the October 6 episode of NXT, a 20-woman battle royal took place to determine who will challenge Kelani Jordan for the NXT Women’s Title at NXT Halloween Havoc on October 31.
The match highlighted WWE’s ongoing crossover partnerships, featuring appearances from TNA talent, including TNA Knockouts World Champion Xia Brookside, TNA Knockouts Television Champion M & Heather by Elegance and Indi Hartwell. During the contest, Brookside and Hartwell eliminated each other, furthering their build toward a Knockouts Title match at TNA Bound For Glory.
The match appeared to reach its climax with a presumed final four of Kiana James, Lizzy Rain, La Catalina, and Kali Armstrong. Armstrong went on a dominant run, sequentially eliminating Catalina, James, and Rain.
As Armstrong celebrated her apparent victory, AAA star Lady Shani re-entered the ring. Earlier in the match, Shani had been pulled through the bottom ropes following an altercation outside, meaning she was never legally eliminated. Shani ambushed an unsuspecting Armstrong, tossing her over the top rope to secure the win.
Immediately after the bell, Lady Shani unmasked in front of the live crowd to reveal she was actually Wren Sinclair operating under the mask. Sinclair had been serving a 21-day suspension handed down by NXT General Manager Robert Stone following a physical attack on Kelani Jordan that accidentally struck a referee.
By executing the disguise, Sinclair bypassed her suspension to earn a shot at Jordan’s NXT Women’s Championship at Halloween Havoc.
