Just weeks after making his explosive arrival in the promotion, Ilja Dragunov wants to test himself in the AEW Continental Classic, making it clear that his presence is about to completely shift the landscape.
Appearing on AEW Advance as the annual tournament approaches, the intense star discussed the prestige and grueling nature of the bracket. Reflecting on past winners, Dragunov noted:
“I mean, it’s possibly one of your favorites for a reason. There is a lot of thought that I have on the Continental Classic because looking back at 2023, Eddie Kingston. 2024, [Kazuchika] Okada. ‘25, [Jon] Moxley. I did get it right in the order?”
Dragunov Highlights Mental Toughness And Teases History With Eddie Kingston
Pointing beyond mere wins and losses, Dragunov emphasized the physical and emotional endurance required to survive the tournament.
“This tournament represents mental toughness, because as far as I remember, all these people went through injuries, through setbacks, through really memorable moments, especially with Eddie. A big moment. A big emotional moment.”
Along with reflecting on his past history with Kingston and teasing a potential collision, Dragunov issued a bold warning to the rest of the locker room about what his arrival means for the company.
“This tournament is representing strength, resilience, and I feel like the landscape of AEW is about to change. Why? Because I am here. So if you talk about strength, about grit, and especially resilience and intensity, and something memorable and emotional to happen, it would be second-hand embarrassing to take away the chance for the people, for me to maybe not be there but I’m not the person to make the decision.”
While management has yet to officially confirm Dragunov as a participant for this year’s tournament, his campaign to enter the bracket has set high expectations among fans.
