Despite Tony Khan recently exiting high-level meetings in Los Angeles feeling extremely optimistic about the company’s future, a new report warns that AEW option year renewal issues with Skydance could quickly derail that enthusiasm.
According to industry reporter Blake Avignon, a former Warner Bros. Discovery executive claims the newly formed Skydance leadership will likely decline picking up AEW’s option year for 2028 if the promotion continues delivering nothing beyond its traditional flagship wrestling programming.
Lack Of Content Diversity Raises Red Flags For New Leadership
The potential block in the media rights agreement doesn’t stem from in-ring performance or wrestling quality, but rather from a perceived failure to expand the brand’s media footprint. Reporting on the insider warning, Avignon shared:
“A former @WBD executive told me they don’t expect the new @Skydance leadership to pick up @AEW’s option year if the company continues offering nothing beyond wrestling programming.”
Following the official merger creating Skydance, corporate leadership is reportedly taking a much stricter stance on content diversification across its network lineup. The source emphasized that simply producing the same core television product won’t be enough to guarantee the lucrative fourth-year option.
“Their concern is that AEW hasn’t diversified its content offering. If Tony Khan expects a renewal by simply delivering more of the same, he might be in for a rude awakening.”
While Khan remains publicly confident regarding the partnership, the perspective of former network insiders highlights a starkly different reality as Skydance evaluates its broadcast portfolio moving forward.
