Update On Tony D’Angelo’s WWE Future Following NXT Title Loss

Following the loss of his NXT Championship at NXT Heatwave 2026, questions immediately surfaced regarding Tony D’Angelo’s future direction and whether a main roster call-up to Monday Night RAW or WWE SmackDown was imminent.

D’Angelo dropped the top prize to Grayson Waller on August 30 in a high-stakes Fatal 4-Way match that also featured Cruz Montana and Zilla Fatu. The finish occurred after Montana leveled D’Angelo with Spin the Block, allowing Waller to capitalize by throwing Montana out of the ring and stealing the pinfall victory.

Main Roster Status & Creative Direction

With Waller now positioned as the central figure and top heel of the NXT brand, speculation naturally pointed toward “The Don of NXT” graduating to the main roster. However, a recent report indicates fans shouldn’t expect to see D’Angelo on RAW or SmackDown in the near future.

According to a report from WrestleVotes Radio, WWE management currently has no active discussions regarding a main roster call-up for D’Angelo. Furthermore, sources emphasized that shifting the NXT Championship to Waller was purely a creative decision for the brand rather than a sign that WWE higher-ups have soured on D’Angelo.

“Additionally, on the flip side, while the decision has been made to make Waller the, quote, current face of the show, we’re told that’s not an indictment of Tony D’Angelo whatsoever,” WrestleVotes reported.

The report added that main roster creative sources confirmed D’Angelo’s name has not been brought up for a brand transfer, with internal expectations pointing toward him remaining in Orlando to anchor NXT programming.

What’s Next For “The Don”?

D’Angelo remains firmly integrated into top-tier NXT storylines despite losing the championship. His immediate next step is already locked in for the September 8 episode of WWE NXT on The CW.

  • D’Angelo will compete in a high-stakes 6-man tag team match alongside Cruz Montana, Keanu Carver, Saquon Shugars, E.K. Prosper, and Mason Rook.
  • The three members of the winning team will advance to a Triple Threat match the following week to determine the #1 contender for Grayson Waller’s NXT Championship.
