Matt Hardy Urges WWE To Reunite Lucha Brothers On Television

Former WWE Tag Team Champion Matt Hardy believes WWE has a major money-making tag team sitting in plain sight, and he is calling on the company to officially reunite Penta and Rey Fenix as the Lucha Brothers.

Speaking on a recent episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy alongside co-host John Alba, Hardy analyzed how the real-life brothers have transitioned into WWE. While both high-flyers spent months building distinct singles paths on WWE RAW and WWE SmackDown—including a high-stakes tournament final where Penta defeated Fenix to earn a match against Roman Reigns—Hardy argued that Penta’s larger-than-life presentation was tailor-made for WWE’s system:

“He has. He has done very well for himself. And also too, like, I mean, Penta has a larger-than-life personality. I mean, I knew when he was going to WWE he would fit in good there, you know, as long as they give him an opportunity and they put him in a position to succeed — and they have, and fortunately it has worked.”

While Fenix experienced a rockier start upon his arrival, Hardy noted that the former AEW World Tag Team Champion has found solid footing in recent months. However, the veteran tag specialist believes their true ceiling in WWE lies together:

“It wasn’t going very well for Rey Fenix for a while, but his luck has turned a bit and he’s had a pretty good last few months. So hopefully, hopefully things start to look up for him too. And I do want — I do want to see them as a tag team again in WWE. I’d really like to see that.”

Teases, Dark Matches, And Patient Strategy

The desire for a full-scale television reunion isn’t exclusive to fans and veterans. Both performers have repeatedly emphasized that their split is merely a temporary chapter. Penta teased a future tag run as far back as March during AAA Rey de Reyes, later reiterating in July that a Lucha Brothers reunion is bound to happen once their individual singles endeavors run their course. Fenix echoed those sentiments, noting that while both the locker room and the audience are eager, holding off until the right creative moment will maximize the payoff.

Interestingly, WWE has already tested the live crowd reaction. Following the July 31 broadcast of WWE SmackDown, Fenix made a post-show save when Dominik Mysterio and JD McDonagh attacked Penta. The segment immediately turned into an untelevised tag team match, resulting in a victorious moment for the reunited Lucha Brothers that off-screen audiences never saw on television.
