AEW commentator Tony Schiavone has taken aim at wrestling fans who actively root for the downfall of All Elite Wrestling, calling out the tribalistic mindset that dominates online wrestling discourse.
Speaking on his podcast, What Happened When, Schiavone pushed back against fans who hope to see AEW go out of business. The veteran broadcaster argued that healthy competition between major companies is essential for keeping the entire industry vibrant and beneficial for fans and talent alike.
“Say what you want, and I don’t know all you WWE fanboys out there that want to see AEW disintegrate. Why you would want to see a company do that, I don’t know. What you don’t realize and what you don’t get is how good competition is for the product.”
Schiavone Rejects Corporate Fan Wars
Schiavone made it clear that while his loyalties lie with his current employer, he harbors no ill will toward WWE. Having lived through the rise and fall of Jim Crockett Promotions and WCW, he views market competition as a rising tide that lifts all ships rather than a zero-sum war.
“The people on Twitter who want the demise of AEW. I don’t want the demise of WWE, and I’m employed by AEW. It’s good for the product. You don’t get that because you’re a f** idiot, but it’s good for the f*** product. So, there I said it and I’ll say it again.”
Industry Health Relies on Multiple Promotions
Reflecting on the cyclical nature of professional wrestling, Schiavone noted that the industry is currently experiencing a strong economic period. However, maintaining momentum across economic shifts requires strong alternative options for fans and performers.
“I really believe that we’re in a very hot time right now. And the key to having a good promotion is when times are not as hot to keep things interesting, keep things going because they’re gonna get hot again. Just good stuff.”
Having experienced both the peak of the Monday Night Wars and the subsequent years of a single dominant promotion, Schiavone remains adamant that wrestling is at its best when multiple major companies thrive alongside one another.
