The potential injury comes at a particularly difficult time for the former Universal Champion. Owens had only just made his return to in-ring action at SummerSlam 2026 earlier this month, following a serious neck injury that had previously put his professional wrestling career in jeopardy.
Upon his return, Owens immediately re-entered the main event picture on SmackDown, targeting WWE Champion CM Punk alongside a crowded title scene involving Sami Zayn, Finn Bálor, and Gunther.

- Final Confrontation: After CM Punk rushed the ring to intervene, Owens confronted the champion, creating an opening for Zayn to strike. Zayn utilized the WWE Championship belt to lay out Owens, Bálor, Gunther, and Punk, standing tall over the entire field to close the broadcast.
