Chris Jericho is set to revive his “Painmaker” persona for a high-profile rematch at AEW Redemption, following developments on the July 15 episode of AEW Dynamite.
During a pre-taped promo, Jericho appeared in his Painmaker hat and signature face paint, officially challenging Tommaso Ciampa to a match at the upcoming pay-per-view event in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Ciampa later responded in a live in-ring promo, accepting the challenge and confirming he will also compete on Thursday’s AEW Collision in his hometown of Boston.
Painmaker Returns Ahead Of AEW Redemption Showdown
The rivalry between Jericho and Ciampa intensified after their brutal encounter at last week’s Beach Break edition of Dynamite. In that match, Ciampa secured a hard-fought victory in what turned into a chaotic and bloody contest. After the bout, Ciampa teased escalating the violence even further by hinting at using a power drill on Jericho.
While AEW has not officially labeled the upcoming match as “anything goes,” Jericho’s Painmaker persona has historically been associated with no-disqualification, hardcore-style matches. The character has been featured in several violent encounters, including a barbed wire match against Eddie Kingston in July 2022. Jericho has also used the Painmaker gimmick during his appearances in NJPW.
With tensions continuing to rise and the Painmaker now back in play, expectations are high for another intense clash between Jericho and Ciampa at AEW Redemption.
