Backstage News On AEW Redemption Main Event Plans

New details have emerged regarding the potential main event for AEW’s upcoming Redemption pay-per-view, with a fresh challenger possibly stepping into the spotlight.

According to Bryan Alvarez, the plan as of a few days ago was for Kenny Omega to defend the AEW World Championship against Kevin Knight at the event. Alvarez shared the update with subscribers, noting that the match was internally listed as the current direction.

“Yes, as of a few days ago, Kenny Omega vs. Kevin Knight was the Redemption title match,” Alvarez stated.

Kevin Knight Emerging As Possible Challenger

Omega captured the AEW World Championship from MJF on last week’s Beach Break edition of Dynamite. That bout had originally been expected to headline Redemption, but plans shifted when the title change took place on television instead.

In the July 13, 2026 edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that the decision to move the match to TV may have been influenced by MJF.

“It was pushed, believed to be by MJF, to get it moved to television. I was not given a reason why, but it doesn’t matter where the suggestion came from, that’s a major change and Tony Khan approved of it.”

Recent reports have also indicated that MJF could be absent from AEW programming for a period of time, which may have contributed to the change in direction. At the same time, Kevin Knight is said to be in line for a significant push, with a possible title opportunity at Redemption.

AEW Redemption is scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 26, at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. While the match has not been officially confirmed, current plans suggest that Omega vs. Knight is the leading option for the main event.
