Chad Gable says working under The Undertaker in AAA changed him in a way no one else ever managed. Speaking with Cody Rhodes on What Do You Wanna Talk About, Gable explained that countless people had tried to unlock a certain part of him over the years — but only The Undertaker succeeded.
“As far as Undertaker goes, I think he gets the credit for pulling something out of me that a number of people have tried to over the years and just haven’t been able to.”
He said the reason it worked is because The Undertaker tapped into something familiar from Gable’s amateur wrestling days: the pressure of wanting to deliver for a coach you respect.
“I’ve always had these coaching figures in my life through amateur wrestling that I’ve always looked up to, like you want to please these guys because they’re your coaches and you want to make them happy and deliver what they’re looking for.”
But for a long time, Gable felt he wasn’t giving The Undertaker what he wanted — and it ate at him.
“He was a guy that I think for a long time I never was giving him what he wanted, and it was frustrating the hell out of me… I need to see progress, and I wasn’t getting it with him.”
The speech that changed everything
The breakthrough came backstage before a ringside brawl with Ludwig Kaiser’s El Grande Americano character. The Undertaker gave Gable a simple but powerful prompt.
“He basically says, what would you do to this guy if he stole something from you? Right. Think of that. Go out. He stole your lifeline here, and he’s taking it and claiming it as his own. What would you do to him?”
Gable said The Undertaker delivered the message in a far more intense and inspirational way — and it flipped a switch.
“He lit a fire under me, and something just clicked… Inside, I lost myself. I was just in the moment like I’d never been.”
When it was over, Gable finally understood what The Undertaker had been trying to get out of him.
“I looked at him and told him that afterwards. I almost wanted to apologize for not understanding it up to that point… But man, he had a breakthrough for me.”

Gable also highlighted The Undertaker’s creative partner in AAA, Jeremy Borash.
“What a guy. Minnesota guy. What a pleasure to work with. Just a genius, creatively… he’s willing and open to collaborate with us on a degree that I just haven’t ever experienced.”
He said the entire creative process felt collaborative, open and unlike anything he had been part of before.
The Undertaker and Borash currently lead AAA’s creative team under the promotion’s partnership with WWE — and for Gable, their influence has already reshaped his career.
