A major moment closed the July 21 episode of WWE NXT, as Mike Santana made a surprise appearance that could signal his next big storyline.
Following Tony D’Angelo’s main event victory over Naraku, Santana emerged from the crowd, creating an intense staredown with “The Don of NXT.” The segment ended the show on a dramatic note, strongly hinting that the former TNA World Champion could be the next challenger for D’Angelo.
Mike Santana NXT Debut Teased Without Official Confirmation
Interestingly, Santana was not identified by name during the broadcast. Commentary avoided mentioning him, and no on-screen graphics confirmed his identity. WWE also did not acknowledge him on social media following the show, a move that often suggests internal processes—such as trademark approvals—may still be ongoing.
Santana, whose real name is Mark Sanchez, recently secured the rights to the “Mike Santana” trademark after filing a new application in May. This could explain WWE’s decision to delay officially naming him on television.
Mike Santana’s TNA Departure and WWE Connection
Santana’s appearance comes shortly after his exit from TNA Wrestling. He wrapped up his run at Slammiversary on June 28, where he lost the TNA World Championship to Nic Nemeth. Shortly after, Santana posted the date “7/15” on social media, which many interpreted as the expiration of his contract.
During his time in TNA, Santana had already built a working relationship with WWE through crossover appearances on NXT programming. Notably, he competed in an NXT vs. TNA Survivor Series-style elimination match during last year’s NXT Showdown, picking up a key victory. He also teamed with OTM in March to defeat Darkstate in a six-man tag team match at MSG Theatre.
Positive Relationship Between Santana and TNA
Despite his departure, Santana remains on good terms with TNA Wrestling. The company publicly acknowledged his NXT appearance, posting a congratulatory message on social media praising his debut.
With his unexpected arrival and immediate confrontation with Tony D’Angelo, Santana appears poised to make an impact on WWE NXT in the weeks ahead.
