Articles of Impeachment Filed Against Linda McMahon by U.S. Representative

Articles of impeachment have officially been introduced against Linda McMahon. The resolution was put forward by Suzanne Bonamici on Wednesday, June 25, seeking to remove the current U.S. Secretary of Education from office over alleged misconduct.

The measure, listed on Congress.gov as H.Res.1391, accuses McMahon of committing “high crimes and misdemeanors.” The resolution outlines several claims, including that she moved key Department of Education programs and offices to other federal agencies without congressional approval. Lawmakers argue that such actions exceed her authority and violate federal law.

The second article included in the resolution alleges that McMahon made false statements during appearances before Congress. A third charge claims she breached public trust while serving in her current role. Following its introduction, the resolution was referred to the House Judiciary Committee for further review.

In a public statement, Bonamici strongly criticized McMahon’s leadership. She said, “Secretary McMahon has betrayed students, families, and educators by dismantling and demolishing the Department of Education, something she does not have authority to do.” She also emphasized that Congress created the Department and that only legislative action can authorize major structural changes.

Bonamici continued, “Congress created the Department and it would take an Act of Congress to shut it down. About 90 percent of students in this country attend public schools. Students have the right to equal access without discrimination and students with disabilities have the right to a free and appropriate education.” She added, “I will not stand by and let Sec. McMahon destroy the federal programs, funding, and research that are critical to public schools and the millions of students they serve.”

Additional details were included in a press release issued earlier in the month. It claimed that since taking office, McMahon ordered the transfer of at least five departmental offices and programs without congressional consent. The release argued that these moves weakened the Department’s ability to oversee programs and distribute funds approved by Congress.

Bonamici had previously confirmed on June 17 that she intended to introduce impeachment articles, signaling that this action had been in development for weeks.

McMahon responded publicly following the announcement with a statement on X, defending her record and criticizing her opponents. She wrote, “It speaks volumes that House Democrats think an impeachable offense is working to improve student outcomes and reduce the federal bureaucracy. They must not be bothered by chronic failures of our education system that result in historic low test scores, a failed FAFSA form rollout, classrooms shuttered during COVID, designating parents as terrorists, and males in female locker rooms.

“Washington spends billions of taxpayer dollars annually—having spent more than $3 trillion since the Department of Education was established in 1980—yet just one-third of children can read proficiently.

“To the Democrats in Congress: do better.”

The situation now moves to the committee stage, where lawmakers will evaluate the resolution and determine whether it will advance further in the impeachment process.
