Tony Khan Clarifies Confusion Regarding AEW Continental Title

Tony Khan Clarifies Confusion Regarding AEW Continental Title – AEW held the first Continental Classic to close out 2023 with a winner being crowned at AEW Worlds End and winning the AEW Continental Championship. It was established at the time that the winner would defend the title throughout the year and whoever held the title before the 2024 AEW Continental Classic would gain an automatic entry into the tournament to continue to defend the title.

Eddie Kingston raised the stakes of the AEW Continental Classic by choosing to put the NJPW Strong Heavyweight Title and ROH Titles on the line as part of the tournament, meaning the winning would gain all three titles.

Kingston won the tournament, establishing himself as a Triple Crown Champion, but leaving some confused as to whether the titles would be defended together or separately.

Kingston defended all three titles against Bryan Danielson at AEW Revolution, but only put AEW Continental Championship on the line against Kazuchika Okada on AEW Dynamite. Okada was victorious, gaining hold of just the AEW Continental Title, while Kingston remains the ROH Champion and NJPW Strong Champion.

Speaking to Liam Crowley of ComicBook, Tony Khan reiterated and clarified the rules and regulations of the AEW Continental Championship.

“Whoever is the champion going into the Continental Classic, they will put the title up going into the Continental Classic. They will have the opportunity to retain it by winning the tournament. The Continental Title will be defended under Continental Rules for the rest of the year. No outside interference, nobody allowed at ringside. Whoever is the champion coming out of Full Gear, they will defend the title in the Continental Classic and at Worlds End, we’ll determine who will be the Continental Champion,” he said.
