St. Petersburg Invests Heavily to Host WWE Royal Rumble – WWE’s Royal Rumble Premium Live Event (PLE) is always a highlight in the company’s calendar, and next year’s edition is set to take place at the Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, on January 27. While the card for the event has yet to be announced, the Royal Rumble serves as the beginning of WrestleMania season and sparks excitement among fans.
In recent years, WWE has had cities bid on some of its bigger events just like they do with WrestleMania. They’ve done this in the past with SummerSlam, Money in the Bank, and Royal Rumble.
While speaking with the Catalyst, Jason Latimer, public relations director for Visit St. Pete-Clearwater, revealed they spent $500,000 of its tourist development tax funding in its successful bid to secure the event.
The economic impact of the event is unknown, but the expectation is over 40,000 fans will be in attendance.
“The exposure and marketing benefits, and the visitation we’re going to get from this, are astronomical,” said Brian Lowack, CEO of VSPC. “We can take those monies that we collect from those visitors in their overnight stays and reinvest them in capital projects here, which will increase visitation.”
They plan to have a lot of activities the week before the event and throughout.
