The NXT brand is going to SummerSlam.
Just who and how isn’t yet clear, but WWE creative director Triple H has always had a soft spot for the development circuit and reports say he is looking to add a pair of NXT-branded matches to the Summer Slam card at Ford Field in Detroit Aug. 5.
Summer Slam is hailed as the ‘biggest party of the summer,’ so you can expect the wrestling world and many online sportsbooks to speculate about the participants, matchups, and odds that will represent NXT.
NXT is coming off its weeklong Gold Rush series which saw WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins fight off a strong challenge from Bron Breakker to retain the big gold belt.
Breakker is one of the NXT stars who has the presence and ability to compete at the next level, either on Raw or Smackdown. The bloodline is there. Breakker is the son of former WCW world tag team champ Rick Steiner and the nephew of Big Poppa Pump Scott Steiner, who had a brief, but memorable run as WCW world champ.
It’s a critical time for the NXT brand as the television contract is up for renewal and the WWE powers might want to use the Summer Slam spotlight to push those stars.
Rollins is one of those stars who started on NXT before becoming one of the biggest names in the sport. NXT has good storylines brewing around the NXT world champion Carmelo Hayes who is feuding with Baron Corbin and NXT women’s champion Tiffany Stratton. Both would be worthy of matches at Summer Slam.
