WWE Hall of Famer Jake “The Snake” Roberts has delivered a blunt critique of World Heavyweight Champion Champion Roman Reigns, offering his unvarnished thoughts on the top star’s current work, conditioning, and overall presentation.
Speaking during a stage interview session with Inside the Ropes, Roberts addressed an audience member who brought up Reigns as their favorite modern wrestler. That response prompted Roberts to voice frustration with Reigns’ current output, suggesting that the champion has settled into a comfortable groove rather than maximizing his potential.
“I just don’t like Roman with what he does out there. I think that he has better stuff in him yet, but I think that maybe he got a little fat, got a little lazy. You know, sometimes when you’re given so much, you quit producing,” Roberts stated.
While Roberts took aim at Reigns directly, he acknowledged that WWE’s modern creative system may also share the blame. The legendary master of the DDT pointed out that today’s performers operate under heavily scripted formats compared to the unscripted promo era of the 1980s and 1990s.
“And I feel like then either that or he just needed better writers. Maybe that was it. You know, I forget that today that you don’t think about your—they write everything for you,” Roberts added.
Reflecting on his own legendary career, Roberts explained why he would struggle to navigate the current WWE environment, stressing that rigid scripts eliminate the authentic personality required to connect with fans.
“I couldn’t wrestle today, man, because I’d be going crazy. I want to do my own interviews, man. I don’t want nobody else writing for me, man. Nobody knows Jake like Jake.”
Reigns remains the focal point of WWE television as he prepares to defend his World Heavyweight Championship against LA Knight in the main event of WWE Money in the Bank 2026 in New Orleans.
