The immediate future of rising NXT powerhouse Mason Rook has been thrown into serious doubt following reports that a sudden medical condition could sideline him for an extended period.
Rook had earned a high-profile opportunity to challenge for the NXT Championship on the September 29 episode of WWE NXT. However, WWE announced hours prior to the broadcast that he had failed to obtain medical clearance, pulling him from the match and replacing him with EK Prosper.
While Rook initially downplayed the situation on social media as a temporary “speed bump” on his path to the top, an update indicates the underlying issue may be far more severe than originally anticipated.
Speaking on the October 7 edition of Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez revealed that sources within the industry are treating Rook’s medical status with heightened concern:
“I have heard… whatever’s going on with Mason Rook, I have been told could be pretty serious,” Alvarez reported. “I’ve been told he could be out a long time — could be a very long time. No one seems to be really talking about what the issue is. Whatever it is, it’s a real issue, and he could be out for a long time.”
Neither WWE officials nor Rook have publicly disclosed the specific nature of the medical issue, and no return timeline has been provided by the company.
The hiatus comes at an unfortunate juncture for the former British independent stand-out (who competed as Will Kroos prior to joining WWE in early 2026). After earning public endorsements from veterans like John Cena for his combination of size and agility, Rook had quickly established himself as a focal point of NXT’s main-event scene.
