WWE has officially announced a major last-minute modification to the lineup for the September 29 broadcast of NXT.
Top contender Mason Rook is no longer medically cleared to compete and has been officially pulled from his scheduled NXT Championship match against reigning titleholder Grayson Waller.
NXT Championship Match Plans Shift
WWE confirmed the development hours before showtime, noting that while Rook will not be able to perform, Grayson Waller will still defend his NXT Championship on tonight’s episode against a replacement opponent that has yet to be named. Further specific details regarding the exact nature of Rook’s medical status or expected timetable for return were not disclosed by officials.
The news comes at an unfortunate time for Rook, who earned his high-profile championship opportunity two weeks ago after defeating Saquon Shugars and Tony D’Angelo in a high-stakes triple threat match. Since making his debut on the brand, Rook has been positioned squarely in the main event picture. Meanwhile, Waller enters the evening in the midst of his second NXT Championship reign, having captured the top prize from D’Angelo at NXT Heatwave 2026 last month.
Rook took to Twitter/X and apologized to fans while admitting how badly he wanted to wrestle.
“I’m sorry. Sometimes life is cruel. Every fibre of my being wanted to compete tonight but unfortunately it is out of my control. I promise this is just a speed bump and not a road block.”
Remaining Lineup For Tonight’s Show
Despite the disruption to the main event, the rest of tonight’s card remains packed with championship action and tournament action:
- WWE Women’s North American Championship: Zaria (c) defends against Thea Hail.
- Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic First Round: Nathan Frazer & Axiom take on Cutler James & Osiris Griffin.
- Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic First Round: Mini Vikingo & Chazz Hall square off against Channing “Stacks” Lorenzo & Uriah Connors.
- Myles Borne is scheduled to make a live return and address the NXT audience.
