Reigning NXT Champion Grayson Waller walked out of Orlando, Florida, with his title intact on the September 29 edition of WWE NXT, turning away a valiant main-event effort from EK Prosper following a chaotic sequence of last-minute changes.
Open Challenge Chaos Sets The Stage
The evening’s main event was originally scheduled to see Mason Rook challenge Waller for the NXT Championship after earning the top contender spot weeks ago. However, after WWE announced hours before showtime that Rook was not medically cleared, NXT executive Robert Stone confirmed that Waller would instead defend his title in an open challenge.
As main event time approached, a frantic rush of NXT talent made their way toward the ring aiming to secure the spot. While high-profile prospects Zilla Fatu and Cruz Montana pushed through the crowd near ringside, chaos ensued as other wrestlers blocked their paths. Capitalizing on the commotion, EK Prosper bypassed the brawl, entered the ring, and officially answered Waller’s challenge.
Waller Capitalizes On Table Spot Injury
Prosper put up a ferocious fight against the champion, bringing the crowd in Orlando to its feet. The tide appeared to turn late in the contest when Prosper cut off Waller on the outside and drove him crashing through the announce table.
However, the dramatic spot came at a heavy cost. Prosper suffered a visible leg injury upon impact, leaving him hobbled as both men crawled back into the ring. Recognizing his opponent’s compromised state, Waller immediately took control, laying out Prosper with two consecutive rolling stunners and securing the pinfall victory.
Following the hard-fought retention, Waller posed on the turnbuckles with the NXT Championship, boldly declaring that while Prosper was good, he simply was not on the champion’s level.
