Grayson Waller Addresses NXT Return, Denies Main Roster Demotion

Newly crowned NXT Champion Grayson Waller has directly addressed fan speculation surrounding his recent return to the NXT brand, vehemently shutting down rumors that his transition back to Tuesday nights represented a career demotion.

Waller made an impactful return on the July 28, 2026, episode of WWE NXT, delivering a high-profile, pipe-bomb-style promo aimed directly at the men’s division. He was immediately thrust into the main event picture, culminating in a title victory at NXT Heatwave 2026, where he defeated Tony D’Angelo, Zilla Fatu, and Cruz Montana in a Fatal 4-Way match to capture the NXT Championship.

Shawn Michaels Personally Asked For Waller’s Return

Speaking during a recent interview on Busted Open Radio, Waller clarified the circumstances behind his shift from the main roster back to NXT, revealing that Senior Vice President of Talent Development Creative Shawn Michaels personally requested his return.

“I didn’t get sent back to NXT. There is a narrative online that I got demoted. [Sarcastically], ‘Oh, I have to be on national television every Tuesday, that’s so tough.’ There is a narrative online that I got demoted. That is not true. There was a phone call from someone who asked to meet with me. I spoke with him. This is a person I respect more than anyone. His opinion means more than anyone. He asked me to come back to NXT. Asked me because the men’s division wasn’t ready. He didn’t have anyone. No one was causing havoc. Everyone wanted the title; no one needed it,” Waller explained.

Waller further emphasized his professional loyalty to Michaels, pointing out that the Hall of Famer knew how much the NXT Championship meant to him after he failed to capture it during his original run on the brand.

“He knows how much I love this place and how much I love wrestling and how much this title meant to me because I never had it. He asked me to come back, and I said, ‘Hell yeah.’ Maybe the way I do things, Shawn isn’t a huge fan of, but he knows the passion I have and the talent I have. I truly believe that Shawn Michaels is the only person who has recently believed in me. I’ll run through a wall for that guy, and that’s what I’m doing right now,” Waller said.

With the NXT Championship now around his waist, Waller enters his second NXT run established as the central figure of the brand’s main event division.
