Podcast host and pro wrestling media personality Conrad Thompson has offered a candid assessment of the current professional wrestling landscape, praising WWE’s historic financial output while noting a growing disconnect between the weekly television product and traditional wrestling fans.
Speaking during an in-depth interview on The Ariel Helwani Show, Thompson outlined his thoughts on the structural priorities of both WWE under TKO Group Holdings and All Elite Wrestling. While reflecting on his dual perspective as a lifelong fan and a successful entrepreneur, Thompson highlighted how corporate growth has reshaped the core target audience for WWE programming.
“AEW is making wrestling for fans, and I think WWE is making wrestling for investors,” Thompson explained. “Their audience is investors.”
Thompson was quick to clarify that his critical evaluation of WWE’s product direction does not undermine his admiration for their corporate achievements. Under the umbrella of TKO Group Holdings, WWE has shattered revenue records through lucrative media rights deals, massive arena gates, and global site fees for premium live events. From a purely economic standpoint, Thompson acknowledged that the strategy implemented by TKO executives is nothing short of extraordinary.
“As a business guy, I look at what TKO is doing, and WWE is doing, and think it’s unbelievable and hugely successful and phenomenal,” Thompson stated. “But as a longtime WWE and UFC fan, I’m less interested in those products now than I have been in the past.”
In contrast, Thompson presented AEW as a promotion designed primarily to cater to diehard wrestling enthusiasts who prioritize in-ring action and traditional storytelling over corporate metrics. By placing emphasis on serving its core fanbase, AEW offers a distinct alternative to WWE’s heavily polished, investor-driven model.
Rather than dismissing WWE’s modern direction, Thompson’s commentary underscores a fundamental division in how modern wrestling promotions measure success—balancing financial earnings for shareholders against engagement with long-time wrestling viewers.
