Following his stunning arrival at AEW WrestleDream, Ilja Dragunov has shed light on the circumstances surrounding his departure from WWE, revealing that nothing in his final negotiations provided the satisfaction or creative perspective needed to stay.
Dragunov officially finished up his WWE run in August, having been kept off television since April as his contract wound down. Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, the former NXT and United States Champion addressed whether he knew his televised match in April would be his last under the WWE banner:
No, absolutely not. Every tale I have to tell about that is not very exciting. I didn’t know I was leaving at the time. I was just waiting. I love what I do. I want to compete and work. It’s nothing new to anybody. It was pretty obvious. Time just passed by, and I reached the expiration of my contract. I felt that, over time, with how things were working out and how I’m feeling, it was time to breathe new and fresh air.
Why Dragunov Decided Not To Re-Sign With WWE
While Dragunov confirmed that WWE made an effort to retain his services and had no initial intention of letting him go, the cumulative weight of creative stagnation and a desire for a change of scenery pushed him toward free agency.
It was an accumulation of a lot of things. The offer, as we all know, is a business, but it’s also based on my feelings. How do I want to work creatively? Do I need a scenery change? You have to consider all the factors. I spent most of my 20s in WWE. That’s a very long time. The landscape changed. Now, we have other opportunities. After such a long time being in the company, not seeking out new opportunities at a place where I see myself more fitting—who wouldn’t do that?
When pressed on whether financial terms—such as a potential pay cut or raise—dictated his exit, Dragunov maintained a professional stance:
I’m too discreet and too much of a businessman and a gentleman to talk about these kinds of things. Everything I can say is that there was nothing that I felt satisfied with and nothing that gave me the perspective of, ‘I must stick with this.’
Looking Ahead To AEW
Dragunov explained that his extended absence from April to August came down to shifting creative priorities within WWE, noting that as new talent emerged and ongoing stories reached capacity, his television time dried up. Rather than harboring resentment, he leaves without regrets following a stellar run that included holding both the NXT Championship and the United States Championship.
The “Mad Dragon” is wasted no time charting his next chapter. Following his surprise debut at WrestleDream, Dragunov is officially scheduled to make his in-ring debut for All Elite Wrestling on Wednesday’s episode of Dynamite.
