Backstage News On AEW Changing WrestleDream Main Event Plans

Adam Copeland Replaced Injured Jay White in AEW WrestleDream Main Event

Following unexpected injuries on the previous pay-per-view card, reports have revealed news on how AEW WrestleDream main event plans changed.

Plans for the high-stakes main event at AEW WrestleDream 2026 underwent significant creative revisions following a string of injuries sustained at AEW All Out. This Saturday’s pay-per-view will showcase the inaugural eight-man Clockwork Carnage match, where Will Ospreay defends his AEW World Championship against a stacked field of challengers.

According to a report from Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the marquee lineup was altered after physical setbacks disrupted original creative bookings.

Creative Adjustments Following Roster Injuries

The creative pivot stems directly from unexpected physical setbacks to primary roster members coming out of AEW All Out:

  • The Original Blueprint: Detailing the lineup, Meltzer reported, “The eight-man Clockwork Carnage main event has AEW champion Will Ospreay, and seven challengers, Samoa Joe, Kazuchika Okada, Ricochet, Konosuke Takeshita, Adam Copeland, Mike Bailey and Darby Allin.” Internal plans originally positioned Jay White in that spot before an injury at All Out sidelined him for one to two months.
  • Tag Team Hiatus: Christian Cage sustained severe injuries at the same event, including three broken ribs and a collapsed lung. With Cage sidelined indefinitely, plans to feature Adam Copeland and Cage as a tag team were put on hold.
  • The Late-Breaking Replacement: Explaining the roster adjustment, Meltzer added, “With Christian Cage injured seriously at the same show, meaning the Copeland and Christian tag team is being put on hold, it made sense for Copeland to be put in this match.”

The opportunity arrives shortly after Copeland announced on AEW Dynamite that 2027 will mark his final year as an active performer. With his retirement timeline now set, competing in Saturday’s main event at the Addition Financial Arena in Orlando, Florida, provides the veteran an immediate opportunity to secure the AEW World Championship before concluding his career.
