Former AEW World Champion Swerve Strickland has earned a reputation inside the squared circle for his ruthlessness and physicality, but his philosophy outside the ring centers on de-escalation, self-preservation, and respect.
During an appearance on the Black in the Green Room podcast with Keith L. Underwood, Strickland opened up about navigating real-world encounters with fans and members of the public who attempt to provoke or invade his personal space.
Swerve Strickland On Staying Calm In Public Settings
Rather than matching aggressive energy or feeding into confrontations outside of a professional environment, Strickland emphasized the importance of keeping a cool head:
- De-Escalation First: “That’s like dissolving situations in a calm, respectful way rather than trying to, like, match it to the other person’s energy, or people invading your space or you’re invading back.”
- Keep Moving: “It’s all like just a respectful, ‘Thank you for the support.’ Keep it moving.”
- Protecting The Brand: “Like doing those things is literally like what preserves you as the professional… like I said, deescalate situations and it doesn’t put you in places that you’re not meant to be in.”
- Leading With Respect: “I definitely am… very pick and choosy of those kind of things. But I’m also… try to lead and leave with respect, in a sense.”
Strickland noted that as his mainstream visibility continues to expand alongside his wrestling and music endeavors, exercising restraint has been crucial to protecting both his personal well-being and his career trajectory.
