Self-proclaimed “Indy God” Matt Cardona has never been one to mince words when it comes to self-promotion and fan engagement, and his latest advice to modern professional wrestlers comes with a sharp reality check.
Taking to social media, Cardona shared a clip from his recent appearance on Chris Distefano’s Chrissy Chaos podcast alongside Chelsea Green, attaching a direct message to talent waiting on creative teams to hand them momentum.
“Find A Way. Create Your Own Path.”
Cardona issued a blunt challenge to wrestlers struggling to connect with the audience, emphasizing that modern social media leaves no excuse for creative stagnation:
“If you’re a pro wrestler and you’re not over. It’s your fault. Find a way. Create your own path.”
Cardona reflected on his early blueprint back in 2011, when he utilized self-produced digital content to force WWE management to acknowledge his overwhelming fan reaction:
- The Birth Of DIY Promotion: “Back in the day, 2011, I was in WWE, but I didn’t like my spot in the card. I wanted to be a bigger superstar, and I knew there was a way to do that. This is like the infancy of social media… nobody was doing it themselves.”
- Creating The Audience Connection: “I had a flip camera, and I was like, ‘The only way to get over is to have a connection with them.’ They’re watching me get killed in three minutes, they’re not gonna cheer for this guy.”
- The Launch Of Z! True Long Island Story: “So I started this YouTube show, Z! True Long Island Story, to let them in, and kind of blended who Matt Cardona was with Zack Ryder. Cause I knew the audience connection was the most important thing.”
Since his WWE release in 2020, Cardona has built one of the most lucrative independent careers in professional wrestling history by continually reinventing his character across GCW, TNA, NWA, and global promotions.
