As noted, WWE is bringing back the prestigious Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic to WWE NXT. First launched in 2015, the multi-brand tournament last took place in 2024, when Baron Corbin and Bron Breakker captured the trophy.
The full 14-team bracket is set to be released on social media later this week, featuring teams spanning NXT, WWE EVOLVE, AAA, WWE RAW, and WWE SmackDown. Appearing on Busted Open Radio, NXT General Manager Robert Stone shared new details regarding the entrant field.
Key Entrants and First-Round Byes
Stone confirmed two additional teams competing alongside The Creed Brothers (Julius & Brutus Creed):
- The Wagner Brothers (AAA): Representing Lucha Libre AAA, the pairing of El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr. and Galeno.
- The Vanity Project (NXT): The current NXT Tag Team Champions, Brad Baylor and Ricky Smokes.
Because both duos hold tag team gold in their respective promotions, Stone confirmed that The Wagner Brothers and The Vanity Project will receive first-round byes in the tournament.
High Stakes and Historical Significance
Reflecting on past tournaments, Stone noted that the Dusty Classic frequently serves as a launching pad for unexpected alliances, citing 2024 winners “The Wolf Dogs” as a prime example. Meanwhile, The Creed Brothers enter the field looking to make history as the first two-time winners, having previously won the tournament in 2022.
While the tournament winners traditionally earn a shot at the NXT Tag Team Championships, the dynamic is unique this year with reigning champions The Vanity Project actively competing in the field. The 2026 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic officially kicks off on the September 22 episode of WWE NXT.
