ESPN has officially pushed back against reports claiming the network has already made up its mind regarding the future of its partnership with WWE.
Following a report from BJ Bethel of SEScoops alleging that ESPN decided it will not renew its five-year streaming agreement for WWE Premium Live Events (PLEs) when it expires in 2030, ESPN released a direct statement dismissing the claim as “completely false.”
Network Clarifies Position on Renewal Rumors
ESPN addressed the situation directly, pointing out that the network was not contacted for comment prior to the report’s publication.
“There is no truth to the report that we have decided not to renew. They never checked with us before publishing and had they, we would have told them that was completely false.”
The current $1.6 billion agreement between WWE and ESPN officially launched in September 2025, bringing WWE’s U.S. premium live event library over to the ESPN App for Unlimited subscribers. The inaugural PLE under the partnership was Wrestlepalooza on September 20, 2025.
Alleged Friction vs. Ongoing Promotional Push
The original report cited several underlying factors for the supposed non-renewal decision, pointing to shifts in the media market, internal “culture and synergy” friction, and difficulties getting traditional cable providers to absorb the app cost for consumers. It further suggested ESPN might reconsider only if subscriber numbers surge drastically or cable terms improve.
Despite those claims, WWE and ESPN have continued cross-promotional efforts around major events. WWE talent regularly appear across ESPN’s studio programming during event weeks, alongside joint marketing efforts such as the Danhausen-themed ice cream truck promotion in Minneapolis during SummerSlam week. Furthermore, select PLE broadcasts continue to feature first-hour simulcasts across ESPN’s linear television networks.
