The original plans for Kenny Omega AEW title win reportedly changed significantly before taking place on television. Omega captured the title on the July 8 Beach Break edition of AEW Dynamite, but new details reveal the match was originally scheduled for a different stage.

Omega defeated MJF in a high-stakes main event to capture the AEW World Championship. The match carried a major stipulation, as Omega would have been permanently barred from challenging for the title again if he had lost.

Kenny Omega AEW Title Win Moved From PPV To Dynamite

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the bout was initially set to headline AEW Redemption on July 26 in Montreal. The concept behind the match focused on Omega receiving one final championship opportunity in Canada following two major losses.

Dave Meltzer explained the original plan in detail.

“This match, and stipulation, where if Omega lost he could never challenge for the AEW title again for the rest of his career, was the plan for the 7/26 Redemption show in Montreal. The idea was Canada and the name of the show was Omega getting his last shot after two high-profile losses.”

The report also noted that the decision to move the match to television may have come from MJF, though no specific reasoning was provided.

“It was pushed, believed to be by MJF, to get it moved to television. I was not given a reason why, but it doesn’t matter where the suggestion came from, that’s a major change and Tony Khan approved of it. So he must feel he’s got something PPV worthy for Montreal on 7/26.”

Kenny Omega AEW title win ultimately took place on Dynamite instead of pay-per-view, marking a notable shift in AEW’s booking strategy. The change also raises questions about what the company has planned for the upcoming Redemption event in Montreal.
