Backstage News on AEW World Title Contenders – AEW has officially outlined the path to determining its next AEW World Championship challenger, with a high-profile contenders series now underway following announcements made on this week’s episode of AEW Dynamite. The promotion confirmed that Kenny Omega, Andrade El Idolo, Swerve Strickland, and “Hangman” Adam Page will compete across multiple matches, with the ultimate goal of earning a championship opportunity at AEW Revolution in March.
The structure of the series will culminate in a decisive number one contender’s match at Grand Slam Australia on February 14. The winner of that bout will go on to challenge for the AEW World Championship at Revolution, adding significant stakes to each match leading up to the event.
However, the lineup was originally expected to include another major name. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter at F4WOnline.com, Samoa Joe was initially slated to be part of the contenders series. Joe had recently been positioned as a top contender on AEW television, making his involvement a natural fit. Those plans changed after it was revealed on Wednesday that Joe suffered a non-contact injury during training and has not been medically cleared to compete, forcing AEW to adjust its direction at a critical moment.
Action in the series began during Wednesday night’s Dynamite main event, where Andrade El Idolo defeated Swerve Strickland. With the victory, Andrade advanced and earned a singles match against Kenny Omega scheduled for February 4. The winner of that match will move one step closer to securing the championship opportunity at Revolution.
Adam Page’s role in the series has not yet been fully unveiled. During commentary, Don Callis stated that he already has an opponent in mind for Page, though no official announcement has been made. That match is expected to take place either on the February 4 or February 11 episode of Dynamite, with the winner advancing to Grand Slam Australia.
AEW Revolution is set for Sunday, March 15, and will take place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California. The event will air live on pay-per-view, with the AEW World Championship match now firmly taking shape following this contenders series.
