Stephanie Vaquer Reveals the Origin of The Devil’s Kiss – Before sealing victories with her SVB, Stephanie Vaquer often rattles opponents with a brutal setup move she calls the Devil’s Kiss. In a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, the former NXT Women’s Champion opened up about how the move came to life—and how it earned its now-famous name.
According to Vaquer, the creation of the maneuver was an accident during training.
“[It was a] mistake,” she explained. “At training, I tried to do a pin. I try to do something with my coach. I say if I do this, this, and I don’t remember well, but the position changed and I say ‘This is nice’. You can take a DDT but many DDTs, and not at the neck, it’s here [on the forehead]. I say ‘Okay, I like this.’ I remember the first time I did it in Mexico and many people say that looks weird, it’s no good. And I said ‘No, I like.’ Many people say ‘Don’t do that. It looks weird.’ I say ‘No, I like’ and I kept [doing it] for a long time and now it’s a big move.”
The Devil’s Kiss, which sees Vaquer slam her opponents head-first into the mat in rapid succession, has since become one of her most recognizable signature moves.
Vaquer also revealed that it was Matt Bloom, head coach at the WWE Performance Center, who came up with the name.
“One time I train in the PC and I am the ring, and I say, ‘I don’t know. I think a lot, but I can’t [think of] a name.’ So I talk with Matt Bloom and say I don’t know a lot about English,” she said. “I know I want to stay more close to American people, so how can I name this move but in English? In Spanish, in translation, sometime it makes no make sense. So I talked with Matt Bloom and he say ‘Yeah, Devil’s Kiss.’ [I said] ‘Yeah, good in English?’ and he’s like ‘Yeah, really good.’ Everybody said really good and said okay, that’s the name.”
The move has taken on a life of its own in NXT, thanks in large part to commentator Booker T, whose enthusiastic calls have made it a crowd favorite. Fans often chant or count along as Vaquer drives her opponents into the mat, cementing the Devil’s Kiss as one of the most popular and unique moves in WWE today.
