Stephanie Vaquer Vs IYO SKY Set for Women’s World Title Match at Wrestlepalooza – WWE has confirmed that a new Women’s World Champion will be crowned at Wrestlepalooza, as Stephanie Vaquer and IYO SKY will battle for the vacant title at the Premium Live Event on Saturday, September 20 in Indianapolis. The announcement was made by RAW General Manager Adam Pearce through a video message aired during today’s show from France.
The title became vacant two weeks ago when Naomi, the reigning champion, revealed that she is pregnant and therefore unable to compete. Both Vaquer and SKY were already lined up for championship opportunities against Naomi before she relinquished the belt, making them the logical contenders for the newly scheduled title match.
Vaquer had secured her opportunity earlier this summer at WWE Evolution, winning a battle royal to earn a championship match at Clash in Paris. With Naomi stepping away, those plans were scrapped, but her chance at the gold remains intact. SKY was also originally set to face Naomi before Clash in Paris, but her challenge too was derailed by the sudden vacancy.
A victory for Vaquer would mark her first main roster championship in WWE. She previously held gold in NXT and has built a decorated international career with title reigns in CMLL and NJPW. For SKY, the match represents an opportunity to regain the championship she lost to Naomi at Evolution.
Wrestlepalooza carries added significance as it will be the first WWE Premium Live Event of the ESPN era. The show will stream live on ESPN’s new direct-to-consumer platform beginning at 7 p.m. EST.
