AJ Lee Set for WWE In-Ring Return at WrestlePalooza – AJ Lee is reportedly preparing for an in-ring return that would mark her first match in more than ten years. According to Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer, WWE is planning a mixed tag team match at WrestlePalooza on September 20, where AJ will team with her husband CM Punk to face Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch.
This development follows the controversial finish at Clash in Paris, where Becky Lynch interfered in the main event to help Rollins retain the World Heavyweight Championship against Punk, Jey Uso, and LA Knight. Lynch’s low blow to Punk fueled immediate speculation that the storyline was designed to bring AJ Lee back to even the odds. Alvarez has since confirmed that this is indeed WWE’s current working plan for the WrestlePalooza card, which will be the first premium live event to stream on ESPN.
If finalized, the match would be AJ Lee’s first since March 30, 2015, when she teamed with Paige and Naomi to defeat The Bella Twins and Natalya on RAW, the night after WrestleMania 31. After stepping away from the ring, she largely remained inactive in wrestling, though she did serve as an executive producer and color commentator for WOW – Women of Wrestling from 2021 to 2023.
It was recently reported that AJ Lee’s name has been coming up more frequently in WWE creative discussions, with sources noting there is now “more traction” than at any point in the past regarding her potential return. Unlike in previous years, these pitches have not been dismissed. One WWE higher-up was also said to be unconcerned about her decade-long absence, citing CM Punk’s successful return after his own extended time away from the ring as evidence that AJ could transition back smoothly.
The potential Punk & AJ vs. Rollins & Lynch bout is shaping up to be one of WWE’s most anticipated matches of the year, carrying both storyline payoff and the historic return of a beloved former champion.
