Athena Taking Time Off From AEW/ROH

Athena Taking Time Off From AEW/ROH – Ring of Honor Women’s World Champion Athena will be stepping away from in-ring competition for several weeks. Sources within AEW indicated that the top champion is expected to be sidelined for roughly five to six weeks.

The exact reason for Athena’s absence has not been confirmed. It is unclear whether she is managing a specific injury, simply worn down from her workload, or taking a scheduled break. Regardless, her time away is significant, as she has been the central figure of ROH’s women’s division for nearly three years.

The news follows AEW President Tony Khan’s recent remarks on the challenges of launching a women’s version of the Continental Classic tournament. Khan explained that the health of the roster was a major concern, and Athena’s reported time off highlights those ongoing issues.

Athena’s reign as ROH Women’s World Champion recently passed the 1,000-day milestone, cementing her as one of the most dominant champions in modern professional wrestling. During her record-setting run, she has defended the title against high-caliber opponents from AEW, ROH, and international promotions.

Her most recent major appearance came at AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door on August 24, where she faced AEW Women’s World Champion “Timeless” Toni Storm in a non-title champion vs. champion match. While Storm scored the victory, Athena’s ROH title was not at risk. Shortly afterward, Athena successfully defended her championship against Mina Shirakawa in late August.

Athena’s upcoming absence will leave a noticeable gap in ROH programming. With her historic title reign still ongoing, attention will now turn to how the company addresses the women’s division while its long-reigning champion is out of action.
