GUNTHER and Roman Reigns Written Off WWE TV Due to Injury and Movie Role – During the August 4 edition of WWE RAW, Michael Cole informed viewers that GUNTHER would be out of action indefinitely due to injuries sustained at SummerSlam.
According to Cole, GUNTHER suffered both a septal hematoma and an orbital blowout fracture during his hard-hitting match against CM Punk. While the injuries were presented as part of the storyline, we noted how the bloody nose GUNTHER sustained was part of a planned angle. He is reportedly undergoing legitimate nasal surgery, and this angle serves to write him off television to allow for recovery.
In addition to GUNTHER’s absence, Roman Reigns was also written off TV in the closing moments of RAW. After CM Punk interfered in the main event between Seth Rollins and LA Knight, Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed attacked Punk and Knight. Reigns hit the ring to make the save, only to be blindsided by a stomp from Rollins. Breakker then speared Reigns, and Reed followed up with multiple Tsunami splashes. This brutal assault appears to be the scripted reason for Reigns’ upcoming hiatus.
Reigns, whose real name is Joe Anoa’i, is scheduled to begin filming for a major role in the upcoming Street Fighter movie. The project will require him to be away from WWE programming for an extended period due to its production demands. Multiple entertainment news outlets have confirmed his casting in the film, marking another major step in Reigns’ expanding entertainment career outside of the ring.
With two of WWE’s top stars now off television, the company is clearly setting the stage for a significant shift in its main-event landscape heading into the fall.
